It's easy to just go off what the schools teach you, and try to fill in what they don't tell you on your own, but some people just don't find the answers as easy as they wish they could. It does seem like these things should be said in school, but we have this article to learn from instead.
Well, the first point is, you don't have to go to art school to have a chance of getting hired. That's not saying you shouldn't, after all it only helps your chances in the long run, but if your good enough you may not need it to succeed. Second point is to focus on you foundations, and not the applications your using. Let's face it, you won't be using the same programs every years, more likely every year it will be different in some way, but your ability won't change as much as next years new programs. Next point is one I find very important, you won't ever be the best, nor do you have to. Really this is also the hardest to fully get use to. Really what should matter is the quality of what you do, so long as your giving it your best, that will be enough. And finally the last point, as an artist, you will never stop learning. Let's face it, art is an expansive subject that steams down to the creativity of the mind, so it's far from easy to stop learning new things, maybe even impossible.
For now though, you have quite a bit of time to prepare for the future, so take that and run with it.
Art is expensive!!! And quality is more important than anything else. Like the saying goes, "quality instead of quantity."
