Right to left character movement

          When it comes to the different shots used in films, we always think of the shots of characters moving toward the audience and away as a sign of a character's motives or stance. However, we hardly take into consideration when characters move from right to left, or vis versa, and the effects it leaves.
          When a character moves from left to right, it can convey a multitude of emotions, commonly these emotions are positive. The character is the hero, they are powerful, have good intentions, can be trusted, or are heading in the right direction (Literally in this case). But when a character moves from right to left, the story changes, and we get the feeling of wrongness from them. They're the bad guy, weak, injured, or heading down the wrong path (Again, literally).
          But why do we think like this? Why does the direction the character is moving change our outlook to them? Well, it may have to do with how we read: from left to right. With this in mind, it's not hard to see that this could be the reason for how we feel about lateral movement. In our minds, things are right when an object moves from left to right, and wrong or off putting when going from right to left.
         So keep this in mind next time you see a movie, you might just find those early signs of where a characters stands or how the scene will go.
